Eat Pray Run, DC

kindleI recently read this interesting NY Times article (written by a UVA alum to boot!) about cutting out technology — taking a “digital diet” if you will. I found this article particularly relevant because I was reading it on my laptop, with my new Kindle Fire sitting at my elbow and my iPhone sitting on my coffee table. Oh, and I’m pretty sure the television was on. It’s almost embarrassing to note how dependent I am on technology.

I’ve decided that I am going to go on a digital diet. No, I’m not giving up my new favorite toy nor am I turning in my iPhone. BUT I think it would be nice if I made a concerted effort to not check email / twitter / facebook while I am with friends. Utopian Dreaming

The University of Engineering and Technology in Lima, Peru has invented an incredible new billboard that sucks humidity from the air and turns it into drinking water for local residents. Clean drinking water can be difficult to come by in Lima, as the city rests on a desert where it rarely rains, and many of the city’s wells are polluted. However, with 98% atmospheric humidity, engineers saw a tremendous opportunity.

The billboard’s generators capture water vapor and, using reverse-osmosis, transform it into potable water that is stored in tanks. Residents collect the water from taps on the billboard and furnish their supplies of clean H2O.

The billboard has produced 9,450 litres of water in 3 months, which equals clean water for hundreds of families.
